The Fine Art of Foliar (Leaf) Feeding*

Great Garden Formulas: The Ultimate Book of Mix-It-Yourself Concoctions for Your Garden

"Plants absorb nutrients very efficiently through their leaves, especially during the first third of the growing cycle.

When plants are growing rapidly, are about to bloom, or have just set fruit, they will quickly respond to a technique called foliar feeding, in which you feed your plants by applying fertilizer to the leaves.

Spray a fine mist of liquid sea-weed, compost tea, or other foliar feed mixture, carefully covering all surfaces of the leaves for best absorption.

Early morning and late evening are the best times to foliar feed because that's when the leaf pores open to regulate the passage of water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide through the leaves.

So at these times, plants will absorb more of the fertilizer.

Don't spray during the heat of the day, when foliar feeding mixtures may burn plants."
